1932 Lahir di Meulaboh, Aceh, Indonesia

I. PENDIDIKAN DAN PENGANGKATAN

1964
Lulus dari Bagian Seni Rupa, Intitut Teknologi Bandung, dengan Studi Utama Pendidikan Seni Rupa.

Ditunjuk sebagai asisten dosen sejak 1960, dan menjadi dosen tetap mulai 1964 di Bagian Seni Rupa (th 1984 menjadi Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain ITB). Pernah mengajar mata pelajaran: Menggambar, Melukis, Seni Grafis, Seni Kalligrafi, Sejarah Seni Rupa Barat dan Sejarah Seni Rupa Islam. Disamping mengajar di S1, juga mengajar di S2 untuk mata Pelajaran Seni Murni dan Desain dan Mata Pelajaran Seni Rupa Modern, Asia Pasifik dan Asia Tenggara.

1969
Belajar desain grafis dan seni grafis di The Department of Arts, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York.

1972 Mendirikan Studio Desain Grafis, di Jurusan Desain, ITB dan diangkat menjadi Ketua Studionya.

1975
Mendirikan Kelompok Seniman, dengan nama “DECENTA”, yang kegiatannya aktif menyangkut olah Seni dan Desain dalam pelayanan masyarakat.

1984
Diangkat sebagai Dekan Pertama dari Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain, ITB yang berakhir sampai dengan tahun 1990.

1989
Diangkat sebagai Wakil Ketua Umum Festival Istiqlal I, Jakarta

1990
Ditunjuk sebagai Ketua dari Indonesian National Committee untuk The Asian International Art Exhibition, yang beranggotakan ± 10 negara di Asia Pasifik.

1991
Diangkat sebagai Wakil Ketua Umum dan sebagai perancang (desainer) untuk pembuatan kitab suci Al qur’an Mushaf Istiqlal (untuk iluminasi dan kaligrafi) oleh Menteri Agama RI.

1993
Dikukuhkan sebagai Guru Besar Madya dalam bidang Seni Rupa, oleh Presiden Republik Indonesia.

1994
Diangkat sebagai Wakil Ketua Umum, Panitia Pelaksana, Contemporary Art of The Non Aligned Countries Jakarta 1995, organisasi induk oleh Depdikbud.

1995
Diangkat sebagai anggota ahli dalam konsorsium perguruan tinggi dalam bidang seni oleh Depdikbud (diangkat kembali).

IV. MONUMENTAL ARTWORK

1980
Member of Design Team for all the artworks of the Sabilal Muhtadin Mosque in Banjarmasin (chandelier, wall calligraphy and openwork doors and gate with copper hammered technique).

1981
Chief designer in setting up “The Historical Museum of the Asian African Conference” in Bandung (interior, graphic communication system).
Commissioned for a high relief mural painting for the main office of the Ministry of Religion (3.50 m x 4.50 m), Jakarta.

1982
Commissioned for a flourescent three dimensional calligraphic work, based on surah Al Ikhlas, length 60 m, height 9 m. Presentation of the work was made by the President of the Republic of Indonesia in conjuction of the National Musabaqah Tilawatfl Quran XII,Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
Member of design team commissioned for renovating the mosque of Baiturrahman in Banda Aceh, (chandelier, wall calligraphy and openwork gate with copper hammered technique).

1983
Member of design team commisioned for Islamic wall calligraphy at the Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta (134 m length, 2.6 m height, made of copper¬ hammered).

1985
Commissioned for a wall carpet for the main office of Bank Indonesia in Jakarta (4 m x 5 m).
